Just after Obafemi Martins gleefully tucked in Birmingham City’s winner at Wembley, obliterating Arsenal hopes of a first piece of silverware in over five years, a horrified Laurent Koscielny, who played a large part in the comedy of errors that led to the goal, received a smack on the back of the head from a City player who was wheeling away in celebration.

This slap was seen across the world, and while it was initially seen as a cruel bit of afters on the Frenchman, it was exactly what every Arsenal fan wanted to give the defender for allowing David to beat Goliath back in 2011, and ensure that the League Cup was not to be that victory to spur the Gunners back into life, and into contention for further, more lucrative prizes.

That slap has, as a confirming reaction to his error, been just what Koscielny needed, as he has clearly grown as a player since that dreadful mistake, and when he takes his place in the Arsenal backline on May 18th against Hull City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, there will surely be no more mistakes from a defender now regarded as one of the very best in the business.

Gareth Bale’s stunning solo goal late last night won Real Madrid the Copa del Rey, disposing of arch-rivals Barcelona in the most dramatic of fashions.

It was a goal to remind the world of Bale’s effortless genius; a goal to add to his growing number of special strikes; and a goal to permanently endear him to the army of Madrid faithful, who may have even begun to doubt him since his move to the Spanish capital.

But how does it compare with some of his previous efforts for the Spanish giants?

It’s getting very close! With just over 57 days left to wait until the start of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, talk has now centred around the possible England squad for the tournament, with a host of dark horses now being mentioned alongside the nailed-on candidates.

Dear old Roy Hodgson’s been doing the rounds for many months now, popping up all over the country to watch prospective candidates for his provisional 30-man England squad. It’s got to the stage that, almost every time an England player does anything decidedly good or bad, Roy is shown looking on intently from the stands!

But who should he take with him to South America?

Right. Here we are, stuck in a confined space, unable to leave for hours, faced with a conundrum that would surely baffle the most sure-footed of football masterminds.

Yes, we're cruising above the clouds in a luxury Emirates A380, comfortably seated in the plane's on-board lounge, looking right at Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazilian legend Pelé.

The question? Who comes out on top in your list of best ever players, and moreover, who would be your first port of call for a photo and autograph?

As part of Emirates' new initiative, I have produced four separate articles on Ronaldo's sky-high battle with Pele. Check out the trio here:

English football has changed quite a bit since the turn of the century.

Way back in 2000, Kevin Phillips was the most feared striker in the top flight, while Manchester City were plying their trade in the old first division. Manchester United and Arsenal were still in their two-club tussle for supremacy, with Liverpool and Chelsea battling with Leeds United for third place rights.

Now in 2014, the footballing landscape is decidedly different, but the individuals who have lit up the Premier League this past decade will always be remembered, and to fit them all into a best XI remains one of the toughest asks for any footballing fan.

With so many choices, and only 11 slots, I must stress that while some of the players omitted from the final cut are certainly worthy of a place in the side, the parameters restrict us to the 2000-2014 seasons, with some fantastic players ending their careers around half-way through this period.

Here is my offering; a team chock full of some of the greatest players to have graced the Premier League, and certainly one to defy the ages…

Photo: football.co.uk

Arsenal have been in fine form this season, but despite being one of only three out-and-out strikers at the club, Bendtner has only played 163 minutes of Premier League football this season for the Gunners.

Not only this, but the Dane feels his general image has been badly tarnished during his time in England, with potential moves even scuppered by people's perception of his mental state,

“People think I’m a psychopath,” he complained to the Daily Mirror,

“The image people have about me is I’m all about partying, that I’m indifferent to football. It’s as far from reality as could possibly be,"

“For example, I’ve talked to clubs who say they’ve heard things about me, so I have to say none of them are true,"

“The perception of me is never going to be positive if clubs talk to people who have a negative view,"

“Of all the things said about me, I’ve only done one thing wrong. That was in Copenhagen (a drink-driving charge),"

“I was a bit hot-headed when younger maybe but you grow up and you expect people to see that.”

The 26-year-old, who is set to appear for Denmark in tonight's international friendly against England at Wembley, signed for the Gunners in 2005, but could be on his way in the summer, having already spent two loans spells away from North London at Sunderland and Juventus respectively.

“I’d like to stay and play every game but I can’t imagine that happening. I think my future is away from Arsenal.”
Manchester City were beaten 2-0 by Spanish giants Barcelona tonight at the Etihad , with goals from Lionel Messi and Dani Alves all but securing the Catalan side’s progression to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

The match hinged on a hugely contentious penalty decision given against City early in the second half. Leo Messi was clean through on goal, albeit slightly to the right of the box, and Martin Demichelis took the gamble of trying to sweep his leg around the his compatriot, and save the day for City.

The veteran defender clearly mistimed his challenge, and brought the Barca star down illegally, but was it in the box?
Chelsea were comfortably beaten 2-0 by rivals Manchester City tonight, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side advancing to the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

The Blues were comprehensively outplayed by City, who exacted revenge upon Jose Mourinho’s side for the 1-0 Chelsea win earlier this month in the league.

Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri bagged the goals, with the former having a particularly decent game, bar an appalling dive in the second half. David Silva ran the show from the heart of midfield, with the Spaniard setting up substitute Nasri for the killer second goal.
Goals from Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri secured City’s passage through to the last eight, and gave Manuel Pellegrini only his second ever win over Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea struggled to get into the game, and were comprehensively beaten tonight, as the entire City team harried and hounded their opposite numbers from the very first minute.
Mario Balotelli. A surreal personification of the dreams the majority of youngsters play out in their heads on a nightly basis; namely a ‘super-villain-esque’ confidence, an extraordinary footballing ability, and a penchant for believing that the game has no superior.

The 23-year-old former Manchester City hit-man has been linked with Arsenal these last few weeks, with the Metro going as far as to say that Arsene Wenger recently met with the player’s agent to discuss options.
