Anyway, here is the second round of the ‘Papadopoulos Perspective’, and once again I am here to express my views of this strange tournament, which is proving to be both unpredictable and yet strangely predictable. The final round of group matches produced more changes in position than a Lib Dem manifesto. That’s right, I can do political satire, sign me up Sky News!
So the group stages are over now and concluded with the eight quarter finalists all believing they have a fair chance of winning the tournament. Granted if you watched the Czech Republic the other day you cannot really see how they felt they could win a pub game, let alone a tournament. The tactic of not going forward or having a shot has in fact rarely been seen since the Blackburn vs Tottenham debacle that disgraced TV screens across the land towards the close of last season. Personal bitterness aside, the Czechs really put on a poor performance against a relatively impressive Portuguese side, who always seem to step it up to at least semi-final level when the Euro championships arrive.
The phenomenon, the icon, the walking advert for using too much hair gel, the one-and-only Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have arrived on the global scene with only one apparent goal….to hit the post more than any man that has gone before. The World’s second best player has stood out so far at this championship, not as much as Messi would have, but has still been above the rest. I believe he is now tournament joint top scorer with 3 or 4, not as many as Messi would have had, but is still good….but just to emphasize, not as good as Messi. I hope we are all clear on that one.
Right, I’m off to drown my sorrows in Greek yoghurt, down some olives, be poor and watch re-runs of ‘Hercules’ until my eyes can take no more.
