With the Premier League taking another hiatus, an international round of fixtures is about to kick off, with a host of interesting ties occurring over the weekend.

 

Many players from all corners of the EPL are involved, with the ‘Big Six’ sending many superstars into the mix. Ranging from impressive looking friendlies, to do-or-die World Cup play-offs; football fans will not be short of entertainment in the Premier League’s absence.

The ‘Football-Talk’ Team of the Weekend: Gameweek 8

 

 

It was ‘as you were’ for the EPL this weekend after another lengthy international break, and us fans were treated to a goal frenzy of sorts from the Premier League’s top teams.

 

Goals come in all shapes and sizes, and this was clearly highlighted on the weekend, with a plethora of varying methods being put on display. From the controversial to the exquisite, taking points were aplenty after a welcomingly exciting round of domestic ties.

Chelsea and Arsenal racked up four goals apiece in their respective Saturday encounters, and Man City powered through to defeat West Ham. Man Utd’s turmoil under new boss, David Moyes continued however, with a home draw against Southampton; while Liverpool will be disappointed not have secured all three points against a weakened Newcastle. Elsewhere, Tottenham eased to victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, pushing them up to fifth.

Going Against the Grain: Wilshere’s comments hit home, but not as intended

 

Jack Wilshere’s comments on Wednesday on what it means to be an English footballer were blunt and hard hitting,

“We have to remember what we are.

“We are English. We tackle hard, are tough on the pitch and are hard to beat.

“We have great characters. You think of Spain and you think technical but you think of England and you think they are brave and they tackle hard. We have to remember that.”

Patriotic to say the least, but Wilshere may have bitten off more than he can chew with his remarks. To cite cliché and stereotype is always a dangerous game, regardless of the subject matter.

Young Jack has inadvertently  highlighted the England national side’s core problem once more, and with his proud pigeon-holing, the Arsenal man seems worryingly blind to it.

There will be many a football fan that would have perceived the last week of international football as an irritation rather than a unifying, patriotic call-to-arms.
